RECREATION NEWSLETTER

JUNE 2023

A NOTE FROM YOUR RECREATION CHAIRMAN REMY BERNARDON:

Recreation Center
I was glad to see so many at the grand opening of the Wanaque Recreation Center.  Paul, the Recreation Director, did a phenomenal job – from first envisioning it, to asking residents for donations (every thing in the Rec Center, except for one item was donated), to setting it up. For now the hours are 9:30 to 1:30 Monday to Friday (with Monday and Wednesday reserved for those 55+) and Wednesdays and Fridays 6 to 9.  We would love to have longer hours but we need volunteers to monitor the facility.  We have various games – board games, decks of cards, video games, ping pong tables, foosball tables, bumper pool table, air hockey table, and TVs with Fire sticks.  Come by and check it out!

Volunteers
I’d like to thank the Rec Commission, and everyone who volunteers to make Wanaque Rec’s sports and activities successful.  As we continue to add more activities, these volunteers get stretched thinner and thinner.  I need to lose weight, but this isn’t the way to do it.  We need more residents to volunteer to monitor the Rec Center.  We need more parents to volunteer to coach.  We need help with social media to get the word out, etc. etc.

Web sites
We have two new web sites.  Please bookmark these pages.

  • WanaqueRecreation.com. – initially this site will be mostly about happenings at the Recreation Center – fitness programs, ping pong and / or foosball tournaments, etc.  Over time, with help, we will include more and more information about all Wanaque Recreation sports and activities.
  • Wanaquerec.Ticketbud.com– We got a lot of feedback, none of it positive, about resident’s experience registering for tickets to the Murder Mystery Dinner.  We explored various alternatives and have decided, going forward, to use Ticketbud when residents are purchasing tickets for themselves; and we will continue to use Sports Connect when parents register their children for their activities.  One important item to note – as the name may imply, Ticketbud sends out e-tickets.  Generally, you can ignore them.  When registering for an event like a Met or Yankee game, the Ticketbud ticket is useless.  You will need the Met or Yankee ticket – we will send you the link to those after you purchase.  Similarly, for our events, the event organizer will have a roster at the door, so while having the Ticketbud ticket may be helpful, it’s not necessary.

We are registering our first three events on Ticketbud:  A Met game in early August, a Yankee game in mid-August, and the Neil Diamond musical on Broadway (A Beautiful Noise) in late June.  You’ll have to go onto the site to get further details :-).

If you haven’t bookmarked our web pages before and decide to do so now, please also bookmark our Sports Connect registration page https://tshq.bluesombrero.com/wanaquenj

SUMMER CAMP- CAMP IN THE Q
Registration for Camp in the Q is open.  You can pick five days a week for six weeks; three days a week for six weeks; and any number of five day weeks.  We recently added a Friday only options (six Fridays).  Registration for all of these is on the Sports Connect site (see link above).

Many people like to read these emails because they get a chuckle out of my sillyness, so here it comes.

Last week a parent asked if they could simply pick which days their child would attend.  That would be near impossible with our Sports Connect site, but since I had been playing with Ticketbud, I thought it would be difficult but possible.  After spending a few hours, I got that registration option up on Ticketbud – other than the fact that we’d have to send parent a form to answer our camp questions.  After proudly telling our Rec Director what I had done, his short reply back was “wouldn’t it be easier if they just went to Borough Hall and registered on paper”.  To quote Homer Simpson “Duh!”  Yes, it would.  However, I DID THE WORK, SO IT STAYS UP!  However, it is simpler to just go to Borough Hall, ask for Mary Ann, register on paper and tell Mary Ann which days your child will attend.  This option costs $65 per day and there is no payment plan option.

FOOTBALL registration is open on our Sports Connect site.

REC SOCCER and CHEERLEADING registration will open on May 15, also on our Sports Connect site.

ADULT INDOOR SOCCER (Futsal)
registration is open on our Sports Connect site.  Registration is very light.  We need at least six more adults to register over the next couple of weeks or we will have to cancel this program.

FITNESS registration programs being offered right now:  TURN UP; and PARENT AND ME ZUMBA.  Similarly, we need a minimum number of people to register or we have to cancel these classes.

I didn’t lie, it is a long email, but hopefully you found it informative.  With even greater hope on my part, I hope you consider volunteering to help.  That could be in the Rec Center a few hours a week, coaching a rec sport, offering to help us with social media.  If you have some time and would like to help, even if you aren’t sure exactly what, email Paul or me.  Thank you.
